A Town Built on Mills, Not Just Rail
New Carlisle's earliest industries ran on water and rail. Flour mills and sawmills anchored the town's economy after Richard Risley Carlisle purchased the former Bourissa Hill land in 1835, and the South Shore Railroad's 1852 arrival turned the settlement into a commercial junction ahead of its 1866 incorporation.
